If you run a website you will very likely be approached by people asking for link exchange. Here some simple questions to ask yourself to help find out whether a link exchange would be beneficial for your domain.
- Most importantly ask yourself whether the link exchange offer comes from a website relevant to your website. A good link exchange will help position you in an environment where potentially interested visitors are found. A link from a totally unrelated website will not bring you many useful visitors.
- Check out the website you are considering for link exchange. Are you comfortable with their practices (pop up windows) or similar agressive advertising strategies. Do you want to be associated with their practices by exchanging links?
- When checking a potential link exchange website check for the number of links already placed on the particular website. If hundreds of links originate from the domain the value of a link exchange will be lower to you.
- Check the google Page Rank (you can do it on google). Generally speaking a link exchange with a high Page Rank website will be more valuable to you than a link exchange with a low Page Rank domain.
- When being offered a link exchange, find out on which particular sub page your link will appear. If this subpage is more than 3 clicks from the main index page the link exchange should be of no interest to you.
- Often people offer 3 way linking, meaning they will offer you a link exchange where you point at a certain domain and receive a backlink from a different source. Generally that is ok, however check the PR value and the content and value of the websites carefully before you agree to a link exchange proposal of any kind
